High concentration of Manganese issues Boil Water Notice and Water Quality Advisory in Williams Lake neighbourhood

The Cariboo Regional District (CRD) has issued a Boil Water Notice and Water Quality Advisory in the Russet Bluff area.

The CRD says the Notice has been issued as the system is transitioned to the Lower Well, as the Upper Well aquifer can no longer meet the seasonal demand.

The Notice is effective immediately, and users of the Russet Bluff Water System are advised to bring water to a rolling boil for at least one minute before:

  • Drinking
  • Cooking
  • Brushing teeth
  • Washing dishes and produce
  • And watering animals.

Residents are asked to use hand sanitizer after washing their hands.

The CRD and Interior Health have issued a Water Quality Advisory because of high concentrations of manganese in the Lower Well that exceed the maximum allowed by Health Canada. It also says that boiling water will increase the manganese concentration.

Interior Health tells residents not to use water from the system to feed infants and young children, as young children absorb more manganese and cannot regulate and eliminate it as readily as adults.

It advises residents to secure and use bottled water or another alternative water source when feeding infants and young children. The Health Authority says water from the system must not be used to prepare formula for bottle-fed babies.

Interior Health says there is little risk to women who are breastfeeding and pregnant.

The Notice will be in effect until further notice from Interior Health and the CRD.
