Cariboo Unemployment Rate Hits Two Year Low

May was another good month in the Cariboo in terms of year over year employment.

Vincent Ferro, a Labour Market Analyst with Stats Canada, goes over some of the numbers…

“We have the labour force survey numbers for the Cariboo region and in the month of May the unemployment rate was 5.6 percent. That is down from 7.5 percent in May of last year. In terms of the number of people that the 5.6 percent represents, it represents five thousand people, compared to 6,600 a year ago.”

5.6 percent is the lowest rate since April of 2016.

Ferro says there were 84,100 people working in the region last month which was up from 81 thousand a year ago.

Ferro says those gains were in both full-time and part-time jobs…

“We had more people working on construction, more people working in retail and wholesale trade and more in educational services.”

There were minor declines in transportation and warehousing.
