Quesnel fire fighters respond to call at local business

The Quesnel Volunteer Fire Department was called out a fire in the downtown core this (Monday) morning.

Fire Chief Ron Richert says the call came in just after 7 o’clock to 160 Barlow Avenue for what was initially referred to as a “hazmat smell.”.

“Upon arrival, and after some investigation, we found remnants of a fire at the Red Tomato Pie building in the dryer. There were some towels in the dryer that had caught fire sometime in the early morning hours, self extinguished itself, but sent a lot of smoke into the building and the adjacent building next door.”

Richert says fortunately the fire was contained to the dryer drum.

He says they used exhaust fans to air out the building, and the business is back open again.

“We did notify the employees that if there was still a strong odor they were to make arrangements to vacate the building.”

Richert says no one was hurt

He says they were on scene for about an hour and a half.

Richert says they responded with two engines and a rescue truck and approximately 8 fire fighters.
