Cariboo Fire Centre To Hold Another Open House In May

The Cariboo Fire Centre will be laying out the welcome mat early next month.

On Saturday May 4th as part of Wildfire Preparedness Day the Cariboo Fire Centre will be holding an Open House.

“We’re inviting members of the public throughout the Cariboo Fire Centre to stop by that day from 10 am to 2 pm.” Madison Dahl, Community Engagement Specialist, said, “Hopefully we will have an Air Tanker and a helicopter available for you to take a look at. We’ll have pilots there to explain what these pieces of equipment are used for in regards to fighting wildfires.”

Dahl added that they will have different members of the Cariboo Fire Centre Commander Centre available to answer questions and talk about what roles they play during the wildfire season.

“We’re hoping to have the Dispatch Room open, people from Operations, and the Regional Wildfire Coordination Officer available to answer questions and show the public how it works in the Command Centre when there are fires that are spotted and how we respond.”

The Cariboo Fire Centre held their first Open House last May which Dahl said went really well.

“We really want to make the Fire Centre open to the public and let everyone come in and take a look at what we’re doing here and how we respond to wildfires. I think we had over 200 people come through last year and there’s something for everyone. One of the big draws that everyone really loved is being able to see tanker up close, to go inside, see where the retardant comes out of and how they really function in regards to wildfires.”

Dahl added that everyone at the Cariboo Fire Centre loved being a part of the first open house last year and that it was really fun to be able to come together to show the public how we work together.
