Taxpayers won’t have to pay to relocate a metal moose sculpture to the city afterall

Quesnel City Council has reversed a decision to spend up to 5 thousand dollars to relocate a metal moose sculpture to the city from Victoria.
Mitch Vik, the Chair of the Financial Sustainability and Audit Committee, provided an update at Tuesday night’s Council meeting.
“We heard from the Mayor regarding a Council initiative which was approved in March regarding a moose sculpture relocation, and were were updated that the funding that was approved by Council is no longer required for that relocation,   It will be funded from donations from the community.”
The original decision to spend the money came on a night when Council approved a 5.6 percent tax increase for 2024.
City Manager Byron Johnson suggested that they make an addition to the proposed motion.
“I was thinking that we could add wording to the effect that the potential donation of the moose sculpture would be made at a future date subject to Council approval at that date because really the ownership of the moose stays with the current artist as the Mayor expressed as opposed to coming to the city, which is why we’re not donating funding towards that.”
Local artist Bert DeVink does plan to donate the sculpture to the city.
