Local grandmother warns of scam targeting grandparents

A Quesnel grandmother has come forward to try and prevent others from falling victim to what is called the Grandparents scam, something she almost did.

It starts out with a very convincing phone call from a grandchild who she says was in her granddaughter’s voice.

She tells her that she was drinking the night before and had been in an accident and was now in jail.

She then tells her grandparent that a lawyer would be phoning her and to stay off the phone.

The so-called lawyer then calls and asks her to put 39-hundred dollars into an account so that the charges will be dropped and her granddaughter won’t have to spend a month in jail.

Fortunately, this grandma, who did not want to be identified, asked to speak to the bank manager…

The grandma did eventually call the police who confirmed that her granddaughter was in fact not in jail.

She says then burst into tears because she was so happy that her granddaughter was safe but she says she also felt like a fool.

The grandma says looking back there were several red flags but she didn’t notice them because she was so concerned.
