Cariboo Chilcotin MLA pushing for improved support for issues in Williams Lake

Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Lorne Doerkson addressed Williams Lake City Council, regarding significant issues that could affect residents.

The first topic brought up at last Tuesday’s meeting was the ancient slide on Dog Creek road affecting a handful of properties, which Doerkson says a petition will be put up referencing disaster financial assistance in the province.

He says the plan is to introduce it from most, if not all of Terra Ridge to support the impacted units.

“This program did sort of see a few changes I guess in Bill-31 that was introduced in the last session of the house, but frankly the program just simply does not work very well for British Columbians, in fact in many cases it doesn’t work at all.”

On top of the petition to support those affected by the slide, Doerkson also shared his support for Atlantic Power, and will be advocating for improvements in fibre to be made.

He says reconsideration of the current contracts between Atlantic Power and BC Hydro need to be done.

Doerkson noted the amount of fibre that’s being burned on a day to day basis throughout the riding is concerning, and says a second look is needed on what’s being done on the landscape with the fibre.

He understands that it’s a complex and expensive situation, but says there are programs like Forest Enhancement Society of BC that could help.
