With Halloween tomorrow, the Quesnel RCMP reminds residents to take precautions while enjoying the festivities.
The annual tradition of trick-or-treating brings pedestrians and motorists onto neighbourhood streets, and police are encouraging families to make sure that safety is a top priority.
“This is a busy time of year for celebrations,” Corporal Jennifer Cooper, RCMP Media Relations Officer, says in a statement.
“We want to make sure that everyone has fun while staying safe.”
For those heading out for trick-or-treating, police have a few tips to keep yourselves safe for the spooky eve.
Police recommend wearing bright or reflective costumes to improve visibility. Make sure you, especially children, can walk comfortably in costumes without tripping. Create a fun necklace with string and glow sticks, wear reflective armbands, and carry flashlights. Stay on sidewalks and make sure to cross roads at crosswalks and street corners. Police also recommend that pedestrians carry a cell phone in case of emergencies and that someone knows their routes.
For drivers, police ask them to slow down in neighbourhoods where trick-or-treaters are out. Be ready and prepared for when kids are crossing at unexpected places. If wearing a costume, make sure that the costume does not interfere with vision and the ability to operate a vehicle. Have a backup plan in case they intend to drink, including arranging a safe ride home.
Police recommend to anyone planning to set off fireworks, they should review the City of Quesnel’s bylaws beforehand. Residents with concerns about the misuse of fireworks can contact the RCMP non-emergency line at 250-992-9211.
Police emphasize that 911 should only be used for emergencies.
