An event to celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day was held today in Williams Lake.
The Northern Shuswap Tribal Council hosted the event held in Boitanio Park in collaboration with many other First Nations.
Executive Director Dawnalyn Bruin said they had many different communities coming together sharing culture, food, experiences, and Indigenous games.
“We had an incredible turnout. We had over 30 vendors here, we had people show up for the parade this morning who didn’t previously register and everyone was welcome of course. We had many people taking in the event at the Park from the schools and the community at large, it’s been absolutely phenomenal.”
Bruin said people who attended had been saying really great things that there was so much food, and so many Indigenous Organizations and partner Organizations taking part.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better day. Everything worked out just absolutely perfectly, the weather was beautiful, and the participation has been mind blowing. We are so grateful for the turnout and for everybody’s involvement in this day.”
Now that this edition of National Indigenous Peoples Day is over, Bruin said probably in a month or so they’ll start planning for next year to get everything fine tuned and make sure we have everything nice and smooth and organized ahead of time.
National Indigenous Peoples Day will be celebrated this Sunday (June 21) in Quesnel, 10 until 2 at the Helen Dixon Centre.
