Cariboo ready to recognize Orange Shirt Day

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, also known as Orange Shirt Day, will take place throughout the Cariboo tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 30.
There are events planned in many communities, including in Nazko.
Chief Leah Stump said they actually started yesterday, Sept. 28.
She said they have a number of people out there.
“I believe this is our 6th year and we have over 20 different people come out. There are hair cutters, foot care, we have people doing Reiki, we have Paradise Salon out that are doing nails, and it’s just a way for our community to get together and share a meal together and just come and do some healing together.”
Stump said it will continue all week, although their big ceremony will still be on the actual day.
“Wednesday is going to be a day where we do a ceremony and we have some of our guests that are here and they will be doing some circles, some healing circles working around the trauma and the grief of the residential schools. We’ll be honouring our survivors, doing the ceremony and ending with a big feast on Wednesday night.”
Stump said it is all happening at the Chuntezni’ai Hall in Nazko.
The Lhtako Dene Nation is hosting a mini pow wow on Wednesday at their Arbour between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
There will be a community gathering at the Central Cariboo Arts Centre on 4th Avenue in Williams Lake from 8-30 until 10-30 a.m., the Xeni Gwet’in community is holding a dinner and event between 4 and 8 p.m., and the Xatsull Heritage Village will be the site of a gathering as well between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
