Cariboo Fire Centre reminds Williams Lake residents of prescribed burn in the area

A prescribed burn is expected to begin today (March 30th) roughly 10 kilometres west of Williams Lake.

The burn will proceed as long as conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation, and will cover around 40 hectares within the community forest.

Fire Information Officer, Madison Dahl says the goal is to help and improve the area.

“Prescribed fire projects like this one are implemented to achieve specific land stewardship objectives, including things like improving wildlife habitat, reducing fuel build-up, and enhancing ecosystems.” says Dahl.

“By intentionally burning now, we’re reducing the risk wildfires might pose to communities, and help communities and BC Wildfire Service prepare for this wildfire season.”

Dahl added that burning will continue periodically until April 4th, and smoke will be visible from Williams Lake and surrounding areas as well to motorists travelling along Highway 20.

Crews will be working on-site to prepare, control and monitor the fire, until the expected end date.
