Williams Lake Community Forest to have prescribed burn this weekend

The Williams Lake area will be seeing another prescribed burn once the weekend hits.

BC Wildfire Service, with Williams Lake Community Forest and Williams Lake First Nation will have the burn roughly 10 kilometres west of the City beside the Fraser River.

Fire Information Officer, Madison Dahl says the burn will cover around 40 hectares within the community forest.

“Ignitions will proceed as long as the conditions are suitable and allow for quick smoke dissipation,” says Dahl.

“however smoke will definitely be visible from Williams Lake and surrounding areas as well as to motorists travelling along Highway 20.”

Dahl added that it’s a continuation of a spacing treatment that was previously completed to reduce stand density and create a more open and fire-resilient forest.

This low to moderate intensity surface fire will be lit in the pre-established area to remove combustible materials, promote local plant growth, and mimic a naturally occurring ground fire.

Crews will be working on-site to prepare, control and monitor the fire, expected to begin on Saturday, March 30th.
