Quesnel gives 1st reading on outdoor smoking bylaw

Smokers in Quesnel could soon have fewer places to light up.

Quesnel City Council had given first reading to an outdoor smoking bylaw Monday evening.

It would prohibit smoking at Lebourdais Park, West Fraser Timber Park, Spirit Square, the Quesnel Youth Soccer fields, playgrounds and playing fields in general and the Fraser River Foot Bridge, including the entrances.

There is also a $50 dollar fine for offenders.

Councillor Laurey-Anne Roodenburg felt that wasn’t enough…

“I’m thinking if we’re serious about this, $50 dollars seems kind of a pittance.”

“I would make sure it really hurts and make it like $150 or $200, make sure they understand.”

“I mean we’re going to go through with all of the education pieces with signs and whatever in these various areas, but I think if we’re going to do this and be serious doing it, they need to take note of what the consequences are.”

There will be a public consultation process before 2nd reading is given to the bylaw.

A report will come back to Council in the fall.
