A hot time will be happening May 30th in Williams Lake

The Williams Lake Fire Department will be putting out the welcome mat this weekend.

Tomorrow (May 30) they invite residents to their annual Open House from 10 am to 2 pm at the fire hall for a day of activities, live demonstrations and fire safety education.

Manager of Fire Prevention and Education, Cory Boyd, said the day will also include the popular junior firefighter challenge where kids can do some of the things that members of the department do on a day to day basis in a race type format.

“We’re going to be doing something a little bit different this year,” Boyd said, “At 1 pm we would always run a firefighter challenge where they would actually run the tower, drag some hose and do a bit of a race. We always ran that at the end of the Open House but this year we’re going to be doing that every hour. So if you come at the beginning of this event you can actually watch some of our firefighters go through that challenge. By running that throughout the day it will give visitors more of an opportunity to see that part of this event.”

The Williams Lake Fire Department’s Open House is family-friendly where you can explore the fire trucks, meet local firefighters and learn more about the work the department does to keep the community safe.

“Our Open House is for all ages,” Boyd said, “We try to make it interesting for everyone who comes. It’s not geared towards any age group. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to see the services your local fire department provides in an interactive and fun way.”

Boyd noted that they are fortunate every year to get great community support for this event.

“Regardless if the weather is beautiful or if it’s a little bit gloomy we’re lucky because we have a place where we can still hold it if it rains and we always get great attendance. Public education and Open House’s really gives us the opportunity to display and show how cool this career could be. As the kids grow up and if they come every year we hope that one day they would think about becoming part of our organization. ”
