Williams Lake Fire Department has 4 new certified Interior Firefighters

Four of the 2025 Williams Lake Fire Department recruits proved they could handle the heat.

On Saturday May 9, after a day filled with heat, smoke and teamwork, they officially earned their Live Fire Interior Attack certification.

“The live fire evaluations that were held was a part of the recruit NFPA 1001 firefighter training,” Deputy Fire Chief Brendan Foote said, “Every recruit has to be signed off on interior firefighting operations to be able to enter into a structure to fight a fire.”

The training was held in the South Cariboo using 100 Mile House Fire Rescue’s burn building.

“This structure is a simulation of a residential home where we can replicate fires in different rooms of the house including fires in the basement or the second floor,” Foote said.

He noted what the Williams Lake Fire Department was looking for from each recruit is safety, communication, teamwork, operational effectiveness and situational awareness.

“All four of the recruits were able to demonstrate these skills successfully and are now considered interior firefighters.”
