Limits To Election Signs Could Be Coming To Quesnel

Leveling the playing field, taking away visual pollution on public property and keeping signs out of the landfill.

That was the battle cry last night as Quesnel City Council gave staff the green light to draft a political sign bylaw that would limit the number of signs a candidate could have.

Ironically, Councillor Ron Paull, the Chair of the Policy and Bylaw committee, didn’t like the idea.

He says everything is fine the way it is adding that while he probably has the most signs, around 220, he has recycled them since 1976.

Councillor Shushil Thapar also voted against the idea, although he did say that he felt people should be allowed to put 30 on one boulevard.

Most, including Mayor Bob Simpson, did agree with it.

He feels council members want to regulate everyone but themselves.

Simpson adds that people can still talk to the public and have them put signs up on their own property.

He says allowing those with money to put signs up everywhere only gives the suggestion of support and is a “distortion” of democracy.

Once staff comes back with a bylaw Council will then talk to other electoral officials such as School Trustees and Provincial and Federal politicians who would also be effected.

What was on the table last night was just 6 signs per politician, although that number could still change as well.
