Federal Government To Help Address the Repeat Offender Situation

The federal government will now be committed to addressing the issues surrounding repeat offenders.

This comes as Williams Lake has been pushing for the governments to do more in helping the situation.

“Well, it’s great that municipalities, the province and the feds are working together on this.” says Scott Nelson, Williams Lake City Councillor.

“They’re dealing with a small segment though, in terms of the violent prolific offenders. We wanted across the board on prolific offenders.”

One of the biggest issues that Nelson noted was David Eby’s catch and release system. As to whether or not the federal government can change that, he says they hopes so.

There will also be a follow-up meeting with the ministers responsible to consider concrete proposals to address bail provisions for violent offenders, and the challenges of repeat offending.

The efforts will also take into account the shared commitments to reduce the over-incarceration of Indigenous Peoples and racialized people, and address the root causes of crime.

This follows the investigative report that shared 28 recommendations to combat prolific offenders, back in late September.
