Sherriffs restrain accused during sentencing hearing

A sentencing hearing at the Williams Lake Supreme Court on Thursday resulted in the accused being restrained by Deputy sheriffs a Justice Ministry Spokesperson has confirmed.

Joe Zombori, who is charged with production of a controlled substance and the possession of a controlled substance with the intent of trafficking, and also mischief had a verbal exchange with Supreme Court Madam Justice Gropper.

Zombori was approached by the sheriffs who took physical control by putting him to the floor, handcuffing him, and escorting him to a cell area.

20 minutes later, Zombori ended up being carried by sheriffs after he refused to come out of the cell when court reconvened.

Zombori was sentenced with a lifetime of firearms prohibition, 17 months in jail, and 6 months of probation.

The Ministry of Justice says Deputy sheriffs facilitate almost 100,000 appearances by in-custody accused annually and that most proceed without incident.

A small percentage result in officers having to use some level of use of force.
