Civilian Monitors appointed into death in Williams Lake RCMP cells

The Chief Civilian Director of the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC has appointed civilian monitors in Williams Lake.

Independent Investigations Office said in the evening on September 30, 2022, RCMP stopped a man and a woman on a moped, then arrested and taken the man to the detachment cells around 12:25 a.m. on October 1, 2022.

The man was found in medical distress at around 4:50am, but was pronounced deceased despite life-saving measures done by Emergency Health Services.

The Monitors, who have been selected by the Tsilhqot’in National Government, will receive complete access to investigative materials, including evidence and statements collected, and assistance from IIO’s investigative team.

Chief Civilian Director, Ronald MacDonald said “On behalf of the IIO, I thank the leadership of the Tŝilhqot’in National Government for working in partnership with my office to appoint these monitors.”

“I have said it before: the IIO is committed to earning the trust of Indigenous Peoples and building confidence in police accountability,”

The Civilian Monitors report will be made publicly available on the IIO’s website when appropriate in keeping with the reporting practices.
