A New WildFire Is Burning South Of Quesnel

There are currently 33 active wildfires in the Cariboo Fire zone which includes one South of Quesnel.

“We will be actioning the Green Mountain wildfire today,” Fire Information Officer Madison Dahl said, “you’re going to see some skimmers and they will be utilizing Dragon Lake. We want to remind community members that we will have aircraft skimming from that lake so to avoid it if at all possible and if you do have watercraft on the lake leave a wide berth for the airplanes so they can do their job.”

The Green Mountain fire was discovered Sunday July 9 just before 7 pm.

On Sunday July 9 at 1:45 pm the Cariboo Regional District Emergency Operations Centre issued an Evacuation Order for eight parcels in the Townsend Creek Area South of Baker Creek.

“We do have BC Wildfire personnel as well as a local contract crews on site,” Dahl said, “we have actioned air tankers and helicopters as well as heavy equipment throughout the weekend. Currently there are no structures that have been lost.”

Also on Sunday (July 9) afternoon Cariboo Regional District Emergency Operations Centre issued an Evacuation Order for 10 parcels in the Gatcho Lake area northwest of Anahim Lake in the Chilcotin.

“It is actually located within the Prince George Fire Zone so there is a special team within the Vanderhoof, Prince George, and Fort St James area that is dealing with this fire cluster.” Dahl said, “It started out a few smaller fires which have merged into one. I t is currently estimated to be about 807 hectares.”

Dahl noted that smoke in the Quesnel area is coming from two of the fires in the West, the Branch Road Fire which was issued an evacuation alert Saturday night for 27 parcels, and the Townsend Creek fire.
