Police Remind Motorists To Be Alert And Vigilant In School Zones

With another school year set to begin, Police Detachments throughout the Cariboo want to remind students, parents, and motorists, they all have a part in making sure the return to classes is a safe one.

“We’ll be out tomorrow (September 8) and for the foreseeable future making sure that everybody slows down and respects school zones,” said Williams Lake RCMP Watch Commander, Corporal Shane Nicoll. “And just a reminder that school zones are in effect from 8 am to 5 pm during school days and that you have to slow down to 30 kilometres an hour.”

Nicoll also reminds motorists that when they see flashing lights on school buses that it is illegal to pass and to be alert and vigilant behind the wheel watching for small children who may step out from between parked cars or off a sidewalk.

“I always remind my kids that when they cross the road that they make eye contact with any vehicles even if they have the right away”, Nicoll added.

As a parent, Police remind you to take time to remind your children about crossing the street safely, wearing a helmet when cycling, and staying safe on buses.
