Staying put and not continuing to wander around: Overdue Hunter Located in Good Condition

An overdue hunter who was reported missing in the Spanish Lake area Monday night has been located.

Cpl. Dave Tyreman, Media Relations with the North District RCMP says the 74-year-old man was located by Search and Rescue this morning in good condition after spending the night in the woods.

“I received the information shortly after 10:30 am. I just did the release prior to that so I have very little details other than to say this was a very positive outcome and this individual did everything right.”

Tyreman says the hunter who failed to reunite with his hunting party,  got lost and did as experts and RCMP recommend to do when lost, not continue to wander around.

“I can tell you stories where we had a lost mushroom picker who got lost and continued walking and actually went about 10 km overnight-still kept walking during the night time.”

“What causes this is Search and Rescue will go the last known location of that individual and start setting up a grid. In that case, that person was way out of Search and Rescue’s grid so basically, as soon as you know you’re lost or disorientated stay put-the experts will come out and find you.”

Tyreman recommends to always be prepared for the unexpected when going hunting or hiking and to have warm clothing on hand and food for not only the day but overnight as well.
