A 51-year-old woman was arrested by Williams Lake RCMP following a series of small grass fires on the south embankment of Highway 97 and Mackenzie Avenue South Monday afternoon.
Sgt. Rick Lebeuf says police received the call at 3:45 pm, with several witnesses reporting that a female walking away from the scene had intentionally started the fires.
Lebeuf says it’s very concerning to not only the RCMP but to all the residents and business owners.
“The grass is dry and these particular fires were started near structures and nearby businesses.”
“We take it seriously and encourage all of the residents and witnesses that go by and see such an act to report it immediately to the RCMP and of course the Fire Department.”
RCMP have recommended charges of arson.
The woman is scheduled to appear in Williams Lake Provincial Court to face those charges today.
