Outdoor recreation groups across the province, including several in the Cariboo-Chilcotin, could benefit from a record-breaking round of funding.
The Outdoor Recreation Fund of B.C. has opened applications for its fourth funding cycle, with $400,000 available to support approximately 50 community projects across the province.
Managed by the Outdoor Recreation Council of B.C. (ORCBC), the fund supports registered charities, non-profit organizations and Indigenous governments working to improve outdoor recreation opportunities, encourage environmental stewardship and make outdoor spaces more accessible.
Several organizations across the Cariboo-Chilcotin have previously received funding through the program.
The 108 ATV Club received $10,000 to secure engineered railway access, improve trail visibility and upgrade gravel connectors. The Williams Lake Powder Kings Snowmobile Club also received $10,000 to repair and upgrade its Yank’s Peak backcountry safety cabin.
Other regional projects have included trail maintenance, grooming equipment and signage improvements.
The Outdoor Recreation Fund was established by the provincial government in 2023 with a $10 million endowment; the fund has supported 109 projects with more than $840,000 over its first three funding cycles.
Those projects have benefited 94 communities, improving 410 kilometres of trails, planting more than 1,000 trees, and removing 2,589 kilograms of garbage.
Applications are now open through the Outdoor Recreation Fund of B.C.’s website.
