Over 200,000 hectares burned since April 1st in the Cariboo Fire Centre

There’s good news to report on a couple of wildfires burning in the Quesnel Fire Zone.

Fire Information Officer Amanda Cullum said the one East of Bourgeois Creek (approximately 1,644 hectares) and the other South of Kluskoil Lake (approximately 1,588 hectares) are both classified as being held.

Cullum said this due to successful response efforts by BC Wildfire Service personnel and resources, and favourable weather conditions meaning they are not expected to spread beyond the current perimeter.

“Several high level and infrared scanning have occurred on these wild fires with no hot spots found outside of the perimeter of the fire. BC Wildfire Service will continue to monitor these incidents over the coming weeks. Nearby communities may continue to see smoke from within the fire perimeter for several weeks.”

Cullum said this is normal as unburnt fuels are consumed within the perimeter and produce smoke.

Since April first there have been 190 wildfires in the Cariboo Fire Centre that have burned approximately 213,339 hectares.

“Currently we have 16 active wildfires with six classified as under control, four being held, and six out of control,” Cullum said, “there have been 20 new starts and and 20 declared out in the past seven days. In the past 24 hours we have had six new starts.”
