Swede Creek area Evacuation Alert Lifted

Earlier this afternoon (June 8) the Cariboo Regional District Emergency Operations Centre lifted the Evacuation Alert for the Swede Creek Fire Area.

It was issued back on June 2, 2026, for 22 parcels covering 17,894 hecatres.

Should conditions change, the CRD Emergency Operations Centre said an Evacuation Alert and/or Order will be reinstated as necessary.

This morning, the Swede Creek wildfire 120 kilometres Northwest of Quesnel was classified as under control.

Fire Information Officer Karley Desrosiers said the change was made partially due to the rain it received at the end of last week.

“About 22 millimetres of rain fell between Wednesday and Saturday, that along with the work the crews have been doing towards containment of this incident. We have about 125 firefighters working on this fire.”

Desrosiers also gave an update on what crews will be working on today (June 8).

“Along with 12 pieces of heavy equipment that work continues just to make sure that this fire is fully extinguished around the perimeter to avoid potential growth when we get back into those drier and hotter conditions.”

She noted that rain continued through the weekend but none yesterday (June 7).

“Temperatures are still quite low however we did see a drop in humidity so yesterday was kind of the first drying day. We fell a little bit more smoke on the incident but overall fire behaviour remained very low. There still is some heat left in there so that’s what crews are focused on now is extinguishing remaining heat especially near the fire perimeter.”

The Swede Creek wildfire remains at 1815 hectares in size and has seen no growth since the overnight period last Tuesday (June 2).

“Just because it is classified as under control that doesn’t mean the work isn’t done so the work will continue. There are a lot of people focused on getting this incident to a place where it’s not a concern later on but we’re certainly trending in the right direction,” Desrosiers said.
