RCMP encourages off-road vehicle operators to know where riding is and isn’t permitted

As riding season begins RCMP officers are seeing an increase in off-road vehicle activity.

Media Relations Officer Kris Clark reminds the public that ATVs. dirt bikes and side by side vehicles are regulated in BC and improper use can result in fines, vehicle seizure, or serious injury.

“The biggest thing I think we want to get across is that we want operators of off-road vehicles to do so lawfully and safely. It’s important for operators to know where you can and cannot ride, what’s required for helmets, or seat belts and make sure that when you are out there and operating that you’re doing so safely.”

Clark said off-road vehicles, including ATVs, dirt bikes and side-by-sides may only be operated on crown land where use is permitted, private property with the landowners permission, or on designated trails, recreation sites, or areas where motorized use is allowed.

“There are places you can’t ride, public roadways, streets or highways, and that includes trails and sidewalks except in very limited circumstances so you can cross a road at 90 degrees where it’s safe and permitted, or in certain areas where there’s short incidental access on roads only where it’s authorized b signage.”

Clark said helmets are mandatory for anyone operating or riding these vehicles and seat belts must be worn at all times in side-by-sides vehicles and other off-road vehicles equipped with seat belts.

He added Police will continue enforcement and education efforts throughout the riding season.

The RCMP encourages riders to plan ahead, know where riding is permitted, and ensure their vehicle is registered, insured, and operated safely.
