BC Highway Patrol wants everyone to have a safe May long weekend

The May long weekend is the most dangerous weekend of the year in BC.

“Every May long weekend we brace ourselves as Police,” BC Highway Patrol Media Relations Officer Corporal Michael McLaughlin said, “We hope there won’t be tragedy and there usually is.”

McLaughlin said they’re asking everyone to really take that time, focus on what you’re doing, slow down, and make sure you are not impaired that you are completely sober.

“And if you’re on a motorcycle, you are a more vulnerable user. Simply by slowing down, being more safe in your habits, you will have a much greater chance of getting to your destination without any issue.”

Motorists who ignore safe habits could find themselves paying some hefty fines.

“When you look at something like excessive speeding the simple ticket is $483 for a level 3 excessive speeding but you have thousands of dollars in towing fees, and impound fees and high risk driver premiums.” McLaughlin said, “If you’re talking about impaired driving the consequences can be even harder on your wallet. You could get criminally charged of course but even the provincial sanctions are stiff.”

McLaughlin said you could lose your vehicle for 90 days, you could lose your license for 30 days and you have to pay to get everything back.

“Really the best case scenario is obey the law that way your safe and you don’t have to deal with all these expensive fines coming from a Police officer.”

BC Highway Patrol ask motorists to remember these safety tips:

Watch out for motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians

Plan extra time for slower vehicles, trucks, and construction

Consider adding extra stops to improve your mood and focus while driving

Drive sober, undistracted, and completely focused on the road
