Excessive speeding proved to be a costly lesson for a Williams Lake learner

A learner driver from Williams Lake recently learned a lesson about excessive speeding.

BC Highway Patrol Media Relations Officer Michael McLaughlin said the incident happened on July 11th on Highway number 5 south of Merritt.

“A brand new Honda Pilot was pulled over for doing 168 km/h in a 120 zone,” McLaughlin said, “the twist that makes it a little unusual this is a learner driver and she had 5 passengers. She claimed all those passengers were family so it’s technically legal but it’s still not a good idea.”

McLaughlin said the driver was issued a $368 fine, cost of a tow truck and a 7 day impound, and at least 3 years of high-risk driver premiums that will bring the total cost close to $2,500.

“Learners do not have the demonstrated skills to safely drive a large number of passengers which is something this driver exemplified when she chose to speed,” McLaughlin said.
