Cariboo Wildfires Lead To Evacuations And Road Closures

The number of communities under an evacuation order continues to grow.

That list now includes 103 Mile, 108 Mile,105 Mile, Miocene, Wildwood and Deep Creek.

The District of 100 Mile House is now under an Evacuation Alert.

Meanwhile, the City of Williams Lake has activated its emergency operations centre at the Fire Hall.

Mayor Walt Cobb explains.

“With all the fires surrounding us and with what was happening we thought we’d better be prepared and ready to go just in case it comes into the City boundaries.”

Cobb says the Centre is located at the Fire Hall with command stations, and communications people.

The city says there is no immediate threat to any structures or property at this time.

No evacuations in the North Cariboo yet.

Quesnel’s Emergency Services Coordinator Sylvain Gauthier talks about the fires in the area…

‘In our area two for sure. One just south of Kersley and one east of Kersley and south of Dragon Mountain.”

Highway 97 near the Alamo was closed earlier due to smoke from a structure fire but at last report traffic was now moving through.

The same can’t be said for Highway 97 2 kilometres north of 100 Mile House to 17 kilometres north of Lac La Hache.

That stretch of road is closed as is Highway 20 due to wildfires in the area.
