Quesnel City Council has given staff the green light to come up with a Multi-family Housing Incentives bylaw.
It would include both Development Cost Charge waivers and tax exemptions.
Those exemptions would be for up to 5 years in West Quesnel and 10 years in North Quesnel.
City Councillor Scott Elliott questioned why they would be different.
Tanya Turner, the Director of Development Services, says it comes down to the fact that there is a huge demand for multi family housing in the downtown core and also very little land available for new developments.
Only Councillor Shushil Thapar was opposed to the idea as he wanted the incentives for all of Quesnel and not just the two areas.
Examples of potential multi-family projects would be condos, seniors facilities and affordable housing projects.
A bylaw will now be brought back to Council for review and that would be followed by a public consultation process.
