Driver Suspected to Have Fallen Asleep Sends Two to Hospital

A driver driving for too long and falling asleep behind the wheel is believed to have been a factor in a double vehicle collision that sent two people to the hospital in 100 Mile House today, July 29.

100 Mile RCMP, EHS, and Local Fire Departments were called to the accident scene along Highway 97, near 90 Mile Loop Road.

Sergeant Brian Lamb says the Police found a truck towing an RV trailer, which was found detached and on its side, in the northbound ditch of Highway 97. An SUV, suspected to be heading southbound, was found on the roadway; both vehicles were damaged.

“It was determined that the SUV crossed the centre line, striking the travel trailer, which caused the truck to lose control,” says Sergeant Lamb.

“The two occupants of the truck were taken to the hospital for injuries believed to be minor. The lone occupant of the SUV was uninjured.”

Lamb adds that fatigue is believed to have been a factor of what caused the driver of the SUV to cross into the northbound lane.

“The information from a testimony was that the driver had been driving for several hours and may have fallen asleep at the wheel,” says Lamb.

The driver of the SUV was ticketed by the RCMP for driving without care and attention.

Police say traffic was delayed for over an hour as the collision was cleared.
