Crews from the Williams Lake Fire Department are continuing its efforts on eliminating remaining River Valley hot spots.
When the fire originally started on Sunday (July 21st), it had grown quickly due to wind and topography, prompting support from BC Wildfire Service (BCWS), 150 Mile, and Wildwood.
Deputy Fire Chief Brendan Foote says the air support from BCWS was critical in knocking the fire down.
“We had fire suppression crews along Mackenzie Avenue trying to keep fire away from commercial and industrial zones along Mackenzie.” says Foote.
“We did unfortunately lose one half of a shop, and a couple of cars from a scrap yard, but other than that the extent of the damage along Mackenzie was pretty minimal.”
While the fire presented challenges, Foote says it was a great effort from all agencies involved.
Other wildfires have been flaring up across the province, with resources needing to be redeployed, which leaves the Williams Lake Fire Department with actioning hot spots.
Foote notes there’s potential to see smoke and small flame in the River Valley over the next little while, and unless there’s a major flare up with weather and everything else, it shouldn’t spread.
