Unemployment Numbers Going The Wrong Way In The Cariboo

According to Stats Canada’s Labour Division Survey, the unemployment rate rose from April 2022 to this past April in the Cariboo.

Analyst Vincent Ferrao said the he numbers were released earlier today (May 5) and went over them.

“For the Cariboo Region the unemployment rate is 7.6 percent and in April of 2022 it was lower, it was 4.8 percent.”

During that same time span, we asked Ferrao what the numbers look like when it comes to people working in the region.

“Just under 82,000 people are working, 81,900 and a year ago there were 90,600 employed.”

Ferrao said there fewer people working in the Goods Producing Sector that includes construction and manufacturing.

In the Service Producing Sector Ferrao said there are declines in wholesale and retail as well as educational services over the past 12 months.

Canada’s unemployment rate stayed at 5 percent for the fifth consecutive month.

BC’s jobless rate was also 5 percent the 4th lowest among all the province’s.
