City Of Quesnel Makes Drinking Well Plans Public

Quesnel residents were invited to an open house late Wednesday (Oct 28) afternoon to provide input into the Environmental Assessment of the City’s drinking water wells project.

It was held in City Council chambers between 3 and 7 o’clock.

Ken Coombs, the Director of Capital Works and Infrastructure, says they are doing exploratory drilling in West Quesnel to determine a future site for a production well and are also installing additional monitor wells around their existing production wells.

Coombs says the idea is to get a better understanding of the aquifer and they intend to put in an application to the environmental assessment office to obtain certification that will allow the city to at times extract more water from the aquifer than is normally allowed.

He says this would only be in cases when other wells have to be temporarily shut down.

Yesterday’s open house was part of a public consultation that is needed.

Coombs says earlier this week they met with both the Red Bluff and Nazko bands.
