Act violation against COVID-19 regulations leads to assault in South Cariboo store

100 Mile House RCMP attended a business in the 200 block of Birch Avenue for a report of a covid-19 violation as well as an assault on an employee Saturday.

“He refused to put a mask on, grabbed a pair of boots, and threw the money at the teller. After being denied service to buy the boots he pushed a female worker out of his way, almost making her fall to the ground, on his way out of the store,” said Sergeant Svend Nielson.

RCMP say it was later found that the local 37-year-old man had not left enough money to cover the cost of the boots in the first place.

The man, later on, turned himself into Police and provided his account of the situation.

“A lot of people do that, they realize what’s to come and decide to just do it without the hassle,” said Nielson.

100 Mile House RCMP served the man a violation ticket for abusive and belligerent behavior under the Emergency Program Act – Covid-19 measures.

Police advised him that he was no longer welcome at the store as per their wishes and that the Police would pursue assault charges against him via summons if charges are approved by the Crown Counsel.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

100 Mile House RCMP wishes to remind the public that the covid-19 Emergency Program Act measures are still in place and that the Provincial Cvid-19 vaccine passport regulations are also in effect.
