Lightning sparks 5 new wildfires within the Cariboo Fire Centre

The Wildfire Management Branch crews are responding to five new wildfires within the Cariboo Fire Centre, all sparked by Friday’s lightning activity.

The largest fire is currently burning four hectares west of Anahim Lake.

A three-person initial attack crew is on site and suppressing the fire with the support of air-tankers and a helicopter.

Sixteen additional firefighters are on route to provide further assistance.

Initial attack crews are also working on three small fires in the Big Bar area and one small fire southwest of Quesnel.

Air-tankers provided support to one of the fires near Big Bar last night and crews mopped up the fire this morning.

The Wildfire Management Branch is expecting a downturn in the weather throughout the Cariboo-Chilcotin with an increase in thunderstorm activity, showers, and cooler temperatures.

With the chance of lightning in the region, the Wildfire Management Branch is asking the public to please report any smoke or fires at 1 800 663-5555 toll-free or dial *5555 on a cell phone.
