Cariboo Fire Centre to conduct prescribed burn

The Cariboo Fire Centre will be conducting a prescribed burn in the Esler Area starting tomorrow, Tuesday, Oct. 27.

Robin Grant, Information Assistant at the Fire Centre, says the burn will cover roughly 10 hectares north of Highway 20, west of Williams Lake.

“Burning may continue periodically until Nov. 10,” Grant says. She added that this prescribed burn is being conducted to reduce the risk of wildfires around Williams Lake by reducing the build-up of dry grass and shrubs.

“Smoke and flames may be visible to those travelling along Highway 20, Dog Creek Road, and Bond Lake Road,” said Grant. “Firefighters will also remain on-site until there is no risk of the fire spreading. They will also return for mop-up operations to ensure the fire is out.”

Caution signage will be along Highway 20 to inform drivers and ensure both the public’s and Firefighters’ safety while operations are underway.

Residents are also being told that smoke from the perimeter of the burn may be visible for up to 24 hours after ignition. The Fire Centre says some minimal smoke may be visible for up to seven days after the ignition.

The Cariboo Fire Centre is conducting the prescribed burn in collaboration with the Williams Lake First Nation and the Cariboo-Chilcotin National Resource District.
