Williams Lake Salvation Army Food Bank in need of Donations heading into Fall

It’s a busy time of the year for the Williams Lake Salvation Army Food Bank as it heads into the Fall.

Community Ministries Director Tamara Kennedy said their percentages are up quite a bit from last year.

“Everything from our Drop-in Centre right through to our Food Hamper Program. We are in desperate need of food in the Food Bank,” Kennedy said, “Our Hampers are up 9.22 percent compared to this time last year so there are quite a few items that we need desperately just fill our shelves.”

Kennedy noted that they are in need of mixed vegetables, things like canned peas and carrots, canned tuna or salmon, diced tomatoes, canned pasta, Hamburger Helper, Stove Top Stuffing, and jam.

As time goes on, the need for the Williams Lake Salvation Army Food Bank continues to grow.

“We’re seeing a lot of new faces coming into our community as well so we’re doing the best to meet the needs of those who come to us for assistance. We’re also gearing up for back to school. For the families that come to us who have children in the home we also send them with school snacks so we’re creating lots of kids packs so the children who do come to us for food assistance also get to have the fun treats in their lunch as well.”

Kennedy noted that in addition to non-perishable food item donations, they also accept monetary donations.

“We do have a little bit of buying power so monetary donations does go a little bit further than it might if and individual was to go to the store and purchase food on our behalf. Food donations can be dropped off at any food store in town in the donations bins or they can come and see us on Borland Street. We do accept donations at the back door from 9 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday and we accept cash and cheque donations as well.”

The Williams Lake Salvation Army is also looking for volunteers and anyone who can donate any of their time is asked to give them a call 250-392-2423.
