A Lake City landmark honouring Rick Hansen has returned to it’s rightful place.
The large wheelchair is back in it’s original spot at the Tourism Discovery Centre complete with a fresh new look.
Executive Director of the Williams Lake and District Chamber of Commerce, Tamara Garreau said they didn’t realize the wheelchair had become that big of a landmark.

“We knew that people enjoyed it, but I don’t think we realized just how much until it was temporarily removed for repairs. The reaction when it came back was absolutely incredible. We posted about it’s return and then that post received over 18 thousand views which was completely unexpected.”
Garreau explained what kind of repairs it was undergoing.
“The seat was lifting so there was some exposed wood there and it had a re-paint. The City noticed that it needed to be refurbished so they took it away and did that. We want to thank the City and recognize them for doing that because it is a pretty popular piece around here.”
Garreau noted that the Rick Hansen Wheelchair is very popular with locals and visitors alike.
“People drive by the Tourism Discovery Centre, see this really big wheelchair and will turn around and come back and take photo’s near it. This landmark was created to honour Rick Hansen and his dream in finding a cure for paralysis and creating a more accessible world. Him being from Williams Lake makes it that much more special,” Garreau said.
