BC SPCA urge pets owners to take precaution during air quality advisories

The BC SPCA is urging pet owners to take precautions during air quality advisories to keep animals comfortable during wildfire season.

The organization said many of the same precautions recommended for people also apply to cats, dogs and other animals.

For dogs, the BC SPCA recommends limiting time outdoors. Dog owners should avoid outdoor play and restrict walks, runs, hikes and games of fetch.

“Focus on only brief bathroom breaks during an air quality advisory and avoid strenuous exercise until air quality improves,” reads their statement.

The BC SPCA noted brachycephalic dogs, such as pugs and French bulldogs, are already at risk of respiratory complications, so anything that could compromise their breathing could be a serious concern.

“Puppies, senior dogs and dogs with medical conditions like heart disease and asthma should be monitored.”

The organization recommends keeping dogs active indoors instead.

For cats, the BC SPCA recommends keeping indoor air as clean as possible because cats can inhale smoke and ingest particles while grooming their fur. A cat affected by smoke may become less active or less interested in food. Cats may also become more reclusive than usual or breathe faster or with more effort.

The BC SPCA is reminding all pet owners, not only those with cats and dogs, to keep indoor air as clean as possible by using a HEPA air purifier and closing windows and doors.

“Animals should always have access to fresh, potable water and plenty of shade, especially if they tend to spend much of their time outside.”

Pet owners are urged to watch for unusual changes in their animals’ behaviour and contact a veterinarian if they have concerns.
