Curbside pickup coming to two Williams Lake neighbourhoods

**updated for clarity on costs and rollout date**

Over one thousand residents in Dog Creek and Russet Bluff will not have to make so many trips to the dump.

The City of Williams Lake Council unanimously voted in a Curbside Adjacency Agreement with the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) at the Tuesday, April 28, Council Meeting.

The agreement, which will offer curbside pickup for both garbage and recycling in the two neighbourhoods for a three-year term.

The CRD first proposed the agreement to the City, which had to amend its current Statement of Works with Recycle BC to include the two new service areas. The expansion had to meet certain criteria from Recycle BC, which it did easily.

“The positive thing for the City and the municipality is that we’re looking at a reduction in the amount of product that could potentially be going into our landfill,” said Councillor Joan Flaspohler.

“We know that there are so many costs that we have to look at in the future for managing that landfill and everything we need to do. So the more our community as a whole recycles, the better.”

The service area of the two neighbourhoods has around 1,437 residents, with 653 households, 144 households in South Lakeside, and 509 in Dog Creek. As of the time of writing, collection costs are not finalized. The CRD says affected residents will be informed of finalized costs as well as the rollout dates.

According to the approved agreement, the CRD will be responsible for providing the service in Dog Creek and Russet Bluff. The Regional District will also be responsible for providing the curbside totes for the residents. As well as any education needed for the curbside collection service.

Williams Lake City Staff were confident the agreement would have little impact on the City’s normal collection operations. The agreement also states the CRD will cover any additional costs for the service to the City.

The recommendation that was brought forward to the council also included a proposal to renew the contract at the end of its three-year term.
