Clubs Day coming back to Williams Lake March 21

An event that hasn’t happened in the Lake City for quite awhile will be taking place this weekend.

On Saturday March 21, the Williams Lake Lions Club will be hosting a Clubs Day from 10 am to 2 pm in the Gibraltar Room at the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex.

President of the Williams Lake Lions Club, Bonnie O’Neill said they as a club, and as many organizations right now, are struggling to maintain a membership that allows us to still carry on with our duties.

“So we have decided to have a Clubs Day and we invited a lot of clubs and a lot of them are coming, we’re going to have a full house. We just want citizens of Williams Lake and the surrounding communities to come out, see what’s available, maybe want to volunteer or find an activity you may be interested in doing.”

O’Neill noted that they’ve had a great response, the City and the Cariboo Regional District are sponsoring the rent for the Gibraltar Room, which we really appreciate because this is really a community service.

She said there will be people from every club there to talk to you about what they do and why they do it and I think it’s well beyond time that we had a clubs day.

“It’s so important for our community to have volunteer organizations who help organize all the activities in our town. Without volunteers we would be nowhere. We would have nothing going on and if there was it would cost so much money that it wouldn’t be beneficial to anyone. So it’s really important to acknowledge our clubs and our volunteers and come out and participate. Even if you don’t join a club, even if you don’t find an activity that’s right up your alley, I’m sure you’ll be more well informed.”

O’Neill added that the City of Williams Lake has a great variety of clubs and organizations to choose from.

“We have service clubs, athletic and recreational clubs, sports clubs, charity clubs, environmental clubs, community outreach clubs. There’s fine arts, dance, performing arts and music. Every club, especially the service clubs, put a lot of time into the community and lot of money too. They donate to a lot of people so if those clubs go down, a lot of the organizations will be suffering.”

She said being part of a club or organization you have opportunities to network and opportunities for fellowship because every club out there has different benefits for them but it’s mostly about fellowship, networking, and feeling good about volunteering and helping out.

“There is a lot of excitement out there for this day because there hasn’t been one for quite awhile and it gives these clubs a chance to showcase what they do and to let the community know what’s out there. I’ve been a lifelong volunteer and I just love it. Some people just don’t seem to see the benefit in it, but once you start and you see what it does for your community and for yourself, it’s wonderful to be a volunteer,” O’Neill said.
