Carver expresses extreme disappointment in statue’s vandalism

Missing arms and pieces of a brimmed hat are just some of the damage sustained to the mountain race sculpture near Chevron at the Y Intersection in Williams Lake.

Carver, as well as one the stars of HGTV’s Carver Kings, Ken Sheen, says he’s very disappointed by it.

“I’m just blown away why there’s always damage in them. I just don’t see the point in it. It’s kind of bad because when you come into town, that’s the first thing you see and if they’re all smashed, what do people think of Williams Lake?”

Sheen says he has the piece to the hat and a couple of pieces of the arms, which were not hacked off, but busted off by vandals.

He says although it can be fixed, he has to hear from the City first about repairing it.

“I think it would help if they’d put a light like they’ve got over at the bull (sculpture near A&W). If they put a light there near the mountain racer, maybe it wouldn’t be as easy to vandalize without someone seeing them”

Sheen says the vandalism of the sculpture is not just a problem in Williams Lake as vandalism seems to happen in every town.

The sculpture was also vandalized in 2012.

Sheen estimates the damage to be between $1,000 to $1,500.

“I have the piece for the hat and I also have a couple of pieces of the arms, but so far I haven’t heard anyone give me a call about repairing it so I’ve just been leaving it alone,” he says.
