Taseko confirms accident claims life at Gibraltar Mine

Taseko Mines confirms an accident at Gibraltar Mine, northeast of Williams Lake, has claimed the life of one contract worker.

In a statement, Taseko says the accident occurred in an active mining area at approximately 5:00 p.m. on Friday, November 21.

The mining corporation says no other injuries have been reported.

RCMP and the B.C Coroners Service are on-site and investigating the incident.

“We are saddened to report the loss of a valued colleague at Gibraltar, and offer our deepest condolences to the affected family, co-workers, and friends,” said Taseko Vice President of Corporate Affairs Sean Magee in the statement.

“Our primary concern is the health, safety, and well-being of our employees. Accordingly, we have halted all activity at Gibraltar until the accident can be fully investigated, and will make counselling and support services available to Gibraltar employees affected by this tragic event.”

Taseko says the accident site has been secured, and mining activity has been halted while the accident is being investigated. According to Taseko, the B.C Ministry of Mining and Critical Minerals has been notified.

The corporation also says all Gibraltar personnel are fully cooperating with the investigation.
