Williams Lake to get Sunday Transit Service… soonish

Bus transit through the Lake City might soon be available seven days a week… Beginning April 2026.

The Williams Lake City Council approved spending $53,481 per year to extend bus services to operate on Sundays, in the Tuesday, November 18, City Council Meeting.

“The intent behind this is to provide that service that’s been requested by the public many different times,” said Councillor Scott Nelson.

Council approved signing a Memorandum of Understanding with BC Transit that will bring Sunday services for three years, starting in 2026/2027.

The City of Williams Lake had previously sent a request for expanded transit services for the 2024/2025 years; however, it was denied by BC Transit due to the volume of local governments across the province that request unprecedented levels of expansions.

“The whole intent behind this decision is to establish this service with the memorandum of understanding,” Nelson said. “This will also ensure that it’s going to be continued for a three-year service.”

City Staff said the expanded service will not require additional bus and driver resources, but will need to be reviewed to determine whether additional resources or adjustments in driver shifts will be needed to accommodate the service.

“I think this will be something that our community will see a lot of good from,” said Councillor Michael Moses.

“Now we just need to get the next step of getting it into our regional district, from our downtown. That’ll be the next push to the Province.”

Sunday Transit service is expected to start in April 2026, which marks the beginning of BC Transit’s fiscal year.
