Emergency crews respond to gas leak fire in Lac La Hache

The Lac La Hache Volunteer Fire Department was called out to a large fire outside a residential home yesterday.

At approximately 7:30pm, at Lac La Hache Station Road, crews called out for support from 108 Mile Volunteer Fire Department, as well as BC Wildfire Service due to trees and brush around the area.

Regional Fire Chief for the Cariboo Regional District, Roger Hollander says crews were able to suppress the fire.

“The Lac La Hache crews were able to protect the exposure, which is the house itself.” says Hollander.

“The flames were coming from the ground, and it appeared that it was a gas main that had broken and had been on fire. The department was able to protect that home until Fortis BC eventually arrived on scene and was able to control the flow of gas.”

Hollander says the cause of the fire is unknown, but witnesses said there was a lightning strike before the gas was on fire.

He added that it was lucky they were able to establish a hydrant on that road to protect the home, and if there is any damage on the outside, it would be pretty minor compared to what could’ve happened without the quick response of crews.

Crews were on scene until around midnight, with Hollander thanking the neighbours for quickly calling 9-1-1.
