Williams Lake City Council had a Special Council Meeting and spoke on the Cariboo Memorial Hospital and it’s staffing.
After the five emergency department temporary closures in six days, the city discussed ways to find the system’s weakest link.
Mayor Surinderpal Rathor says an option is to look at a neighbouring community.
“A similar issue was with Clearwater hospital.” says Rathor.
“The Mayor of Clearwater came up with the idea that we should have a culture review, Operation Management review at the hospital.”
Rathor added that this could be one way to determine why their retention has been poor up to this point.
He noted that the average standard is to have four patients for every one nurse, however the Cariboo Memorial Hospital emergency department finds itself with eight patients per nurse.
He says that is a liability issue, and can’t imagine anyone wanting to work in that atmosphere.
Following the Special Council Meeting, a Committee of Whole Meeting was held, where lifting the unvaccinated ban on healthcare professionals was brought up.
Rathor says that recommendation would be brought forward on July 16th, the next Regular Council Meeting, where Council will discuss and vote.
