Quesnel Housing Solutions Table urges province to do something with old QJS site

Quesnel City Council has agreed to pass on a request to the province by the Housing Solutions Table about a valuable piece of property in the downtown core.

Councillor Scott Elliott is the Chair of that committee.

“I have a recommendation here that due to the need for housing that correspondence be sent to the province that the former Quesnel Junior School lands in North Quesnel should be made available as soon as possible for that purpose. That was carried unanimously.”

That motion also passed unanimously at last night’s Council meeting.

The old school was demolished in April of 2020 and returned to green space not long after that.

The site has been in limbo ever since.

Elliott also provided an update on some of the housing projects that are in the works.

“Xerox Housing, reporting they will begin construction of a 57-unit apartment in June on St. Laurent Avenue next to City Hall. The Tillicum Society intends to start construction of a 34-unit apartment this spring directed at low-income housing. MJI is developing 20 units of market rental with intended occupancy in August, and BC Housing is proposing a 24-unit transitional housing building on Anderson Drive.”

Elliott also talked about how BC Housing has purchased the 530 Carson property, previously known as the Grace Inn.

He said it will be transitional housing with different opportunities for personal assistance.

Elliott said the plan was to bring in Atco-type trailers to house individuals on-site while construction occurs.

He said 20 to 24 people will be housed during construction, but that number would grow to between 40 and 50 once everything was built.
