The province is providing playground funding for 26 school districts throughout the province including two from the Cariboo.
School District 28 and Cariboo Chilcotin School District 27 will both receive $195,000 each for a new playground at River View Elementary in Quesnel and Lac La Hache Elementary.
Brenda Hooker, Secretary Treasurer for School District 27 said they applied for the funding in September and were excited to hear that they were approved this Spring.
“That funding is part of the Playground Enhancement Program with the Ministry of Education. It’s a minor capital funding program that the District applies for yearly.”
This investment in playgrounds promotes physical activities for kids, teaches social skills, like sharing, and helps them develop like skills like conflict resolution.
The playgrounds are also designed to accessible for children of all abilities.
Hooker said in the past they have received funding from the Ministry of Education for other playgrounds in the District.
“But we’ve kind of itemized them in area of priority and we are particularly anxious to replace all of the older wooden structures in the District, so we have a list of the ones that really need to be spruced up. We are really thrilled and I know that the Lac La Hache community is excited to have a new playground as well.”
Hooker noted they already have the playground on order and are hoping to have it fully installed by the time school starts in September at La La Hache Elementary.
Every school district has received at least one playground since the program started in 2018.
